Keeping sport horses hydrated isn’t as easy as you may think. The days are hot and long, making it vital to ensure your horses are well hydrated.

When dehydration occurs it can lead to symptoms of colic. Avoid a big vet bill and learn how to keep your horse hydrated during the summer.

  1. A Large Bucket or Tub of Water

Having water readily available is fairly obvious. But, ensuring it is clean and even providing them with multiple options will ensure they drink up. If you use an automatic waterer, beware that they can heat up. Cool water is much more satisfying on hot days than warm water, so check the water’s temperature.

The larger the bucket or tub, the longer it will stay cool. Having various size options will entice your horse to drink more.

  2. Use Electrolytes

If you are riding during the summer, ensure that you have electrolytes on hand. There are powdered electrolytes that work well or keep some tubes on hand for rapid delivery. You can add a scoop to their grain, on top of their hair, or add a small amount to one of their water sources. Don’t add too much to their water as we do not want anything to deter them from drinking.

  3. Add Water to Everything

All horses should have water added to everything but, it is especially important to add water to everything a picky horse eats. Hay and/or pellets absorb water easily and most horses don’t notice.

Sport horses are usually on some kind of grain and adding water to the grain can be an excellent way to keep your horse hydrated. Add just enough water to make it sloshy and let your horse enjoy.

It is important for all animals to stay hydrated throughout the summer. If you ride during the summer, it is especially important to keep your horse well hydrated.
